On August 11, 2014, the world was shocked to find it had lost comedic genius and Oscar-winning actor Robin Williams.

Williams took his own life after a decades-long battle with depression and the onset of Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease.

But William's left behind an amazing career as a stand-up comic, TV star on Mork and Mindy, and leading roles in such unforgettable films as Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, and Good Morning, Vietnam.

In major fertility breakthrough, scientists film first-ever embryo implantation

It has become increasingly common to wait until later in life to start having children. That means the oftentimes already-challenging process of conceiving often requires medical help. One of the more successful techniques is in vitro fertilization (IVF), an expensive process that often requires multiple attempts. In one attempt, researchers were able to capture, in real-time, a human embryo implanting itself on an artificial uterine wall.

This discovery can ultimately help doctors improve the success rates and mechanics behind IVF, meaning a higher likelihood of pregnancy for couples and individuals using the option. What's particularly cool and unique is that they created a new ex vivo implantation platform that allows high-resolution microscopy. It's like building a tree house to hide and watch birds in their natural habitat. In this instance, they built the trees too.

Prince broke a borrowed guitar with a wild onstage toss in 2013. But the story ended well.

When Prince took the stage, anything was possible—from feral, shirtless screaming to hall-of-fame guitar solos to the kind of destructive rock-star showmanship that few others would be willing to attempt. One of his signature moves was throwing his instrument—sometimes into the air, where, on one memorable occasion, it seemed to vanish completely; other times over to a technician waiting in the wings. Many of these guitars—including his "Cloud" axe, built by Dave Russan—suffered a fair amount of abuse. "He would always throw them to the roadie at the end of the show, and they weren’t always caught, so they’d have to be repaired often," Russan told Alternative Nation. "They were hard rock maple but couldn’t always stand up to that."

But that was Prince’s gear. Not the case in a case from 2013, when The Artist performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, having borrowed a guitar from "Captain" Kirk Douglas of house band The Roots. The wild promotional spot ended with a bold toss, a broken instrument, and a supremely bummed-out musician. But the story is even weirder than you might expect, and it led to a surprisingly happy ending.

Such an example is when Ford mechanic Richard Guilford got a message from a stranger on Facebook saying that the wallet he lost eleven years ago was found in the most bizarre place.

Minnesota mechanic Chad Volk was trying to snap a filter box back into place after replacing the cooling fans on a 2015 Ford Edge that had 151,000 miles on it. Volk looked to see what the problem was and he found the culprit: a wallet that was sandwiched between the air filter box and the transmission.

Scientists stunned after discovering gigantic missing blob of water in the Atlantic Ocean

Scientists previously discovered a specific type of water mass called “Equatorial waters” in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Given the similarities in the Atlantic Ocean, they wondered if a similar water mass might exist there. In the fall of 2023, they discovered a large water blob in the Atlantic, which they named “Atlantic Equatorial Water.” Their detailed study was published in Geophysical Research Letters in a paper titled “Is There an Equatorial Water Mass in the Atlantic Ocean?”

According to the research paper, a “water mass” is defined as a body of water that originates in a particular region of the ocean and whose physical properties differ from that of the surrounding water. These properties include temperature, salinity, isotopic ratios, oxygen, silicate, nitrate, phosphate, etc. The study of these properties can offer insights into the oceanic circulation, mixing, and biochemical processes.

Entrepreneur and University of North Carolina professor Jim Kitchen isn’t a stranger to risk. After all, he had traveled to 193 countries and even visited outer space. This is why, in June 2023, he initially agreed to travel in the Titan submersible on a deep dive expedition of the sunken Titanic led by explorer Stockton Rush. However, a week before he and others were to travel into the underwater depths, he asked a question that saved his life.

During a safety briefing, Kitchen asked the mission coordinators a series of questions. Many of them were reasonable, such as “What does the weather look like?” and “How long could they expect to be waiting at sea before making the dive?” But according to Kitchen, his concerns were waved off and everyone looked annoyed that he would even ask anything. Then came his last question: How many times did the Titan submersible make this dive down to the shipwrecked Titanic?
