For those of us who grew up in the United States eating lunch in a cafeteria, the idea of looking at a bunch of trays of school food may be less than compelling. But what's surprisingly interesting, however, is what children from the rest of the world are eating instead. Check out these common lunch dishes from around the globe and let us know they seem accurate.

The photos were part of a project entitled “School Lunches around the World" by Sweetgreen In Schools, a program “that educates kids about healthy eating, fitness and sustainability through fun, hands-on activities."

Man in his 30s recycles nearly half a million cans to earn a down payment on a house

In a particularly hilarious episode of Seinfeld, season seven’s "The Bottle Deposit," Kramer and mailman sidekick Newman hatch an ambitious scheme: accumulate an exorbitant amount of bottles and cans, transport them from New York to Michigan in a mail truck, and redeem the items for 10 cents each—double the going rate in their home state. Driving on a back road late at night, they even transform the road song "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" into a rallying cry: "We fill up with gas; we count up our cash!" Their plan, naturally, goes awry (it's a long story involving a deranged mechanic and JFK's golf clubs), but the core idea remains tantalizing: What if you could turn literal garbage into a windfall?

One Australian man, 36-year-old Damian Gordon, did precisely that. By patiently utilizing the regional "Return and Earn" program in New South Wales over seven years, he was able to turn nearly a half-million cans and bottles into roughly $45,000, partly funding a down payment on a two-bedroom house. The recycling program, which similarly offers 10 cents per eligible drink container, has a noble mission: reducing the volume of landfill and putting money "back into the pockets of the community."

A post on Reddit is making the rounds on the Internet showcasing the budget of a Gen Z worker who is working full time and is still struggling, even though they are living with their parents. After breaking down their monthly earnings with a $16/hour wage, they calculated that after making payments for gas (including fuel for driving his parents and brother around), rent to their parents, food, car payments, and cell phone service, they only take home $96/month in savings. But that little bit of money is one car repair away from disappearing altogether.

The average cost to buy a house in the United States is over $500,000, and having a single-family home built on your property could cost an average of $323,000. Amazon is offering customizable “tiny houses” with a front porch for under $11,000. That’s nearly twice as cheap as the average used car. The small house promises consumers to be easily assembled without any drills or nails involved due to its foldable design. There is customization in mind in which potential buyers can purchase extra rooms and amenities such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting for an additional cost. For some models, you can purchase additional floors to stack onto the base kit. This could sound like a dream for many non-homeowners, as a 2024 survey found that the majority of them don’t (or can't) buy a home due to lower incomes and higher cost of living.
